Social Media Brake-Break

I think one thing we can all agree on, is that a social media break now and then is essential to maintaining some sense of equilibrium.  Whether one actually takes the break, to put on the brakes…easier said than done.  When you’re an artist/creative/business person, it’s hard to make that leap and commit to a break.  When there’s so much happening in the world, it can seem like ‘hiding’ from what’s happening.  But for self-care, we have to set aside what popular belief says, and rest the eyes.
Well, the time has come for me to commit.  I’ve just made 40, politics and news keep intensifying and the divides seem to keep widening.  And while I’ll do my best to maintain aware and connected to ‘what’s happening’, a solid break from FB/IG are necessary for me to prevent burnout.  This will give my husband and I time to focus on our recording, writing and learning processes.
I’m looking forward to 4-6 weeks with a little less distraction.  Here’s a poem about it.

7/30/20
Get thee to the trees
In the forest or to the sea
Or to a lake, take a break
Before you break or fail to make
The most of life, drop the dull knife
Cut through the strife before it siphons
Off every joy and smile
Go at least 100 miles
In the direction of peace, find a release
Find a place to heal
Where the truth can be revealed

There’s a lot I’ve left undone
I’ve been distracted and on the run
It’s not the setting of my sun
But the need to have some fun
The need to create
To leave behind the hate
And find love is our natural state

I’m tired of waiting and hesitating
Censoring myself in the interest of placating
I have no interest in debating
Whether my truth meets your rating
Whether my words are satiating
Whether the light is simply fading
Or if it’s life that we’re all evading

Following and Filling Your Heart

winter skyThis one just spilled right out of the pen in one fell swoop and even moved me after reading it back to myself, like messages from the subconscious to lift me up out of doubt and encourage me on the path.  And so I share with you now, passing the baton of courage.  xoxo

Sometimes we underestimate people
Sometimes the mind is feeble
Sometimes we are unreasonable/unreachable
And sometimes we are regal

Don’t ever look for reasons
To say your life is not in season
Or that your path is not yet seasoned
Or that your art has no reason

Every piece of art created
Is never overrated
If the heart took part in creating
And the soul was renewed in the making

Sometimes we shy away from
The very thing that could be a haven
Sometimes we hold ourselves back
For fear of failing or falling or lack

But if we open up to flying
We may find we found our pack
Get past just trying
And realize our impact

Open up the night
Let your life be inspired
Open up the lights
Set your soul on fire

Renewed and imbued
With warmth and grace infused
Dig deep in the dirt and grit
Find your worth and see where you fit
Know what you’re born to do
And find you’re living proof

If you just stop caring
Whether anyone gives a care
But continue to share like you care
And do your best to be aware
To relax into the flow
While the people come and go

Don’t think about what you’re not
And focus on what you are
And don’t you ever stop
Following and filling your heart

Grow Anyway

I’m trying to be more in-the-moment with sharing new words versus reading a poem 6 months later and then hem-haw-ing about it in my wish-wash-way…but then there’s always the opinions, and maybe questions I’d rather not answer.  I tend to … Continue reading

Creative pauses and surges

The holding on
The letting go
The keeping up amidst the flow
Try as we might
To do something good, something right
Staying up til the middle of night
Then fighting fatigue in the daylight
The creative urge surges
Until we link and merge with what nurtures

I realize some epic moons have come and gone since my last post.
Phases and stages.
A variety of factors have had me procrastinating this particular outlet…time/technology/over-thinking…I’m sure you understand.
But my favorite reason for not posting recent poems & pics is:
Sweet Jones has a new album we’ve been recording and a summer tour I’ve been building/booking!
This has taken all spare time the last few months. EXCITED!!
The album is titles Home: Vol. 1 and will be released June 23rd, 2015. The southwest tour through TX/NM and surrounding regions goes 6/25-7/19.
I’ve set us up with Instagram (finally joining another branch of social media!)
And will be posting pics from the road.
Follow/join email list if it interests you 🙂

In the meantime, a few recent pics…
And by the way, first time posting from iPhone WordPress app. Forgive me if it looks strange. 😉

Blessings in Disguise

I can already feel the tides shifting toward the positive as the new year begins trickling out into a flow.  In New Orleans, Mardi Gras season is in full swing, though this year, I’m a little more internal/creative/quiet.  As we get beyond mercury retro and Mardi Gras, and into that new moon and Chinese New Year (Feb 19), I feel the momentum will be picking up.  I am grateful.  🙂

We all do our best
I guess it’s sometimes maybe less
Than where we’d hope to be in time
Or maybe we were always fine
It’s just we hoped there’s more to find
Inside these vessels of blood and vines

In and out of stillness
As the grass grows tall around us
And the weaknesses we long to leave behind
They still intrigue the mind
Maybe we can listen for
The blessings in disguise

I know that I love to give
And life can be of service
But sometimes when my light goes dim
And chaos is the path we swim
Patience wears too thin
I hope you understand

Please don’t take it personal
This challenge universal
Humanity in growing pains
Insanity then back to sane
We’re all searching for
The meaning in our name

Here’s a collection from one of our recent strolls through Crescent Park in the Bywater neighborhood of New Orleans…plus a couple of Frady, one of our cats, because he’s too cute to not share 🙂

2015 dream a new dream

HAPPY NEW YEAR!
2015, dream a new dream.  Move deliberately and with care.
Find what it means to claim new beliefs and sew new seams
Into a tapestry that gleams with the hope of sun beams.

12/30/14

Is it all just talk, or will you walk the walk?
Will these ideas have a follow through?
Will they make a difference if made true?

Or is it just a fleeting thought
A thing that can’t be taught
A light that can’t be caught
A fight that can’t be bought

But who’s keeping score?
It’s not a competition or a war

One day at a time, follow the vine
Detours and distractions sometimes just fine
Take your time because there is no time
But don’t let it tangle up your mind

Hold steady that sunshine
The hope of the innocent
Remember what it meant
The first time you dreamt

Doesn’t matter how it went
For 1000 others in the end
Your story has weight
Don’t let the words wait

It’s never too late
To rewrite your fate
In a state to create
And let that fill your plate

I am the graceful and grateful companion of God
Sat Nam, Wahe Guru
Each day I wake is a blessing
I walk in love and gratitude

With each step is forgiveness
With each breath is kindness
With each heartbeat is love

There is no hurry, there is no worry
Living in the now, I can say wow
Nowhere to be, nothing to achieve
Stillness is key and the faith to believe

Let fellow earth walkers do what they must
They follow their own rhythm to trust
Let go without reaction
Let God be in action
Call what you have now satisfaction

02/27/06

Think before you speak
Drink your truth and link
The worlds that always shrink
Swim before you sink

Time is on the brink
Life happens when you blink
Don’t let it go to waste
Savor the taste of grace

Remember the love you face
Expand your positive place
Let go, let go of the race
Don’t lose yourself in the maze

Remember to be amazed
By the caring and the crazed

Review and Renew

“Our goal while on this earth is to transcend our illusions and discover the innate power of spirit.  We are responsible for what we create, and we must therefore learn to act and think with love and wisdom and to live in service to others and all of life.”

Anatomy of Spirit by Caroline Myss

I’ve been typing out my journals of poetry and musings for a few years now, more often now than when I began this process.  I feel a momentum to it now and am enjoying the process.  I have large storage bin full of journals that I’m sifting through (in no particular order) as I create a manuscript that will eventually be books or volumes of poetry to publish.  This is part of why I started this blog, a place to organize some of it and tip toe into the world of sharing.  Somehow it feels more risky than what I do when I write a song and sing it.  That is part of why I’m reluctant in posting poems more often; that and just the quantity to choose from can be daunting (same goes for choosing photos).

Throughout my journals over the years, I’ve written down many quotes that were especially important to me at the time, or that I related to, or related to what I was going through.  I find that the quotes still inspire and move me, and often times I read them at just the right moment (again).

I opened a new (old) journal to begin typing today, and the very first thing written in this journal (from November 2004!), was today’s quote at the top of this post.  And it is exactly what I needed to read today!  Caroline Myss is an incredible author and teacher, and her books always nudge me toward growth.  Ten years go by, and we change and grow, we review and renew, and yet remain ourselves.  Fascinating, this life.   Thank you for sharing and participating in the journey.  Be well and safe travels!
