Speak Up/Vote/Life Is Short

A series of poems from various timelines, all with the same theme – VOTE! and being mindful of how that vote affects our fellow beings, human and otherwise, and the planet.

Speak Up
To speak up or be silent
In the face of injustice
The muddy roots have been stirred
Change and fierce opposing notions
Knocking on every door

Will you lie down and wait
Will you fill up with hate
Will you call on goddess great
Will you call out these men of state

Stand up and be heard
Vote with your word
Pray the highest good
Unfolds as it should

Vote, No Joke!
Better vote, it ain’t no joke
Better get woke before we go up in smoke
Decisions they make, well they misspoke
Risks they take find us broke

Better vote, it ain’t no joke
Words so fake as they build this hoax
Lives at stake as they burn our notes
Worlds may break unless we cast our votes

Before we’re deeper in the ditch
Before they make another switch
Before they tear another stitch
Before the rich just get more rich

Life Is Short
This governing body
Does not govern my body
I’m no object to control
I’m a living breathing soul

The truth will be told
I know the lies you’ve sold
A human’s heart of gold
Has been left out in the cold

They keep driving this rift
But there’s gotta be a shift
They try to keep us separated
With lies they instigated

But we, the people are stirring
Waking up, shaken and burning
We’ve been activated
We won’t be underrated

Truth gets elevated
We won’t be sedated
We won’t be relegated
To the hate you’ve paraded

Life’s too short to fall for that bait
Love’s too strong and needs no debate
The time is now, we can no longer wait
The time is ripe to seal our fate

Every Last Vote

Grow Anyway

I’m trying to be more in-the-moment with sharing new words versus reading a poem 6 months later and then hem-haw-ing about it in my wish-wash-way…but then there’s always the opinions, and maybe questions I’d rather not answer.  I tend to … Continue reading

Creative pauses and surges

The holding on
The letting go
The keeping up amidst the flow
Try as we might
To do something good, something right
Staying up til the middle of night
Then fighting fatigue in the daylight
The creative urge surges
Until we link and merge with what nurtures

I realize some epic moons have come and gone since my last post.
Phases and stages.
A variety of factors have had me procrastinating this particular outlet…time/technology/over-thinking…I’m sure you understand.
But my favorite reason for not posting recent poems & pics is:
Sweet Jones has a new album we’ve been recording and a summer tour I’ve been building/booking!
This has taken all spare time the last few months. EXCITED!!
The album is titles Home: Vol. 1 and will be released June 23rd, 2015. The southwest tour through TX/NM and surrounding regions goes 6/25-7/19.
I’ve set us up with Instagram (finally joining another branch of social media!)
And will be posting pics from the road.
Follow/join email list if it interests you 🙂

In the meantime, a few recent pics…
And by the way, first time posting from iPhone WordPress app. Forgive me if it looks strange. 😉

Blessings in Disguise

I can already feel the tides shifting toward the positive as the new year begins trickling out into a flow.  In New Orleans, Mardi Gras season is in full swing, though this year, I’m a little more internal/creative/quiet.  As we get beyond mercury retro and Mardi Gras, and into that new moon and Chinese New Year (Feb 19), I feel the momentum will be picking up.  I am grateful.  🙂

1/23/15 –

We all do our best
I guess it’s sometimes maybe less
Than where we’d hope to be in time
Or maybe we were always fine
It’s just we hoped there’s more to find
Inside these vessels of blood and vines

In and out of stillness
As the grass grows tall around us
And the weaknesses we long to leave behind
They still intrigue the mind
Maybe we can listen for
The blessings in disguise

I know that I love to give
And life can be of service
But sometimes when my light goes dim
And chaos is the path we swim
Patience wears too thin
I hope you understand

Please don’t take it personal
This challenge universal
Humanity in growing pains
Insanity then back to sane
We’re all searching for
The meaning in our name

Here’s a collection from one of our recent strolls through Crescent Park in the Bywater neighborhood of New Orleans…plus a couple of Frady, one of our cats, because he’s too cute to not share 🙂

Capturing Moments

I’ve been looking up at the sky my whole life, day or night, always fascinated.    This gallery is me finding the magnificent in the ordinary moments of the day.  Lots to be grateful for as we settle into the last couple months of 2014, reviewing and renewing, and setting new goals for a new year coming.

It’s the little bits you do for people
That let your spirit shine through
It’s the little bits of truth you seek
That carry you along your route
(that carry you back to your roots)

Bathe my spirit in light
Let my fields be a golden sight

Let us love before we fight
Let us live through this night
Let us listen to what is right
And be uplifted out of plight

Let us be gifted with second sight
From our sixth-centered eye
Let us be a spirit spy
Ever watchful of the sky

Ready to learn to fly
And hear the reasons in the why.

Review and Renew

“Our goal while on this earth is to transcend our illusions and discover the innate power of spirit.  We are responsible for what we create, and we must therefore learn to act and think with love and wisdom and to live in service to others and all of life.”

Anatomy of Spirit by Caroline Myss

I’ve been typing out my journals of poetry and musings for a few years now, more often now than when I began this process.  I feel a momentum to it now and am enjoying the process.  I have large storage bin full of journals that I’m sifting through (in no particular order) as I create a manuscript that will eventually be books or volumes of poetry to publish.  This is part of why I started this blog, a place to organize some of it and tip toe into the world of sharing.  Somehow it feels more risky than what I do when I write a song and sing it.  That is part of why I’m reluctant in posting poems more often; that and just the quantity to choose from can be daunting (same goes for choosing photos).

Throughout my journals over the years, I’ve written down many quotes that were especially important to me at the time, or that I related to, or related to what I was going through.  I find that the quotes still inspire and move me, and often times I read them at just the right moment (again).

I opened a new (old) journal to begin typing today, and the very first thing written in this journal (from November 2004!), was today’s quote at the top of this post.  And it is exactly what I needed to read today!  Caroline Myss is an incredible author and teacher, and her books always nudge me toward growth.  Ten years go by, and we change and grow, we review and renew, and yet remain ourselves.  Fascinating, this life.   Thank you for sharing and participating in the journey.  Be well and safe travels!
